What to expect at a Tomorrow Model UN Conference

Updated: Jun 23

At a Model UN conference, you can expect to meet a number of delegates from all around the world who have the same objectives as you: to represent their delegations.

In general, you should expect your conference to be full of informed discussion and debate. Everyone is there to learn and improve as a delegate, so don’t be afraid to reach out and talk to as many committee members as possible! The way to succeed in Model UN is through cooperation.

TMUN has a duration of around two days. On the first day, delegates will have the opportunity to make an opening speech. An open, formal debate will then take place, in which all delegates will be able to express their agreement and/or disagreement with their peers ideas and position.

It is important to remember that delegates should never use personal pronouns when participating in a debate. They should address themselves as their countries full name (ex: People's Republic of China) or as a delegation (ex: the delegation of China) at all times. During the debates, all delegates are required to use Points and Motions:

  • Point of Information: so that a delegate may ask a question

  • Right of Reply: so that a delegate may answer a question asked

  • Point of Inquiry: so that a delegate may ask a question to the Chair about MUN procedure

  • Motion for an Un-Moderated Caucus: informal discussion so that delegates may have time to discuss a specific matter in hand within their respective blocs

  • Motion to Move into Voting Procedure: when a delegate feels the topic has already been thoroughly discussed, so that whatever was being discussed is put to a vote

The delegates will then form into blocs, in accordance to their countries views regarding the topic. An unmoderated caucus will then take place within these blocs. An unmoderated caucus is an open and un-formal discussion between delegates. Each bloc will eventually write a Resolution, which will then be sent to the Chair. A Resolution is a written document that contains your bloc’s solutions regarding the topic. We recommend you watch the following video so as to better understand how a Resolution is written: https://youtu.be/KLoktLNfXRo?si=_Na7r_ukq-dJLaRcThis. This concludes the first day of TMUN.

That same day, the Chair will choose one of the Resolutions drafted, and send it to the delegates, who then have the possibility of writing a position speech for or against said Resolution.

The second day of TMUN, the chosen Resolution will be presented by its sponsor. Position speeches will then be given, and a Moderated Caucus will begin, so that delegates may defend, attack or clarify certain points of the Resolution. A moderated caucus is a structured debate controlled by the Chair to discuss specific aspects of a topic. Afterwards, delegates will draft amendments so as to modify the Resolution. These amendments will be thoroughly discussed and voted on. Once the committee has gone through every amendment, the delegates will vote on the final Resolution. This will conclude the conference.

Finally, awards will be given out to delegates at the very end of the conference:

  • Best Delegate

  • Honorable Mention

  • Best Position Paper
